Sparrow Square

The new Kingsboro Psychiatric Center establishes a new green public square at the heart of this multi- use development. Conceived as a beacon for the community, the new green square forges a strong connection with its urban context through expansive passageways for vehicles and pedestrians, creating a porous and inviting perimeter. The proposal extends East 42nd street all the way through the site to Winthrop street, allowing cars, bikes, and pedestrians the ability to reconnect the north and south edges of the neighborhood. Our proposal expands the public space, welcoming the community in and offering parking and retail points on all sides of the park. An underground parking garage helps to meet the new demand generated by this project. A new park for the community at large, it functions as the “green lung” of East Flatbush with a mix of open and intimate spaces from a community pavilion to expansive open lawns.
